Swedish Evangelical Lutheran Church
1870 – 1937
Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church
1937 – Present
The Swedish Evangelical Lutheran Church was organized on April 27, 1870, at the home of John A Moberg, three miles west of Osage City, currently the family farm of the late Albert and Pauline (Johnson) Lundgren.
There were twenty-two charter members: John Anderson, August Bloom and family, Swan Bloom and family, C.J. Colstrom and family, John J. Dahl and family, J.N. Dalin, A.P. Magnuson and family, John A. Moberg and family, C.J. Rapp and family, Andrew Anstrom, S.O. Swan Anstrom, and John G. Swedberg.
A stone with lead plaque was placed at the (Moberg) Lundgren Farm in the spring of 1940 for the 70th Anniversary Celebration of the church. The photo above is of the oldest living charter member present at the celebration, Mary (Moberg) Johnson, 82 years old and daughter of John A. Moberg. Her grandchildren, members of the church, are the late Pauline (Johnson) Lundgren and late Ernie Johnson. Several great-grandchildren and their families are current members of Grace.
The late Rudy Fager and late Oliver Lindahl found the granite stone in the Glacial Moraine near Junction City, Kansas. Rudy made the lead plaque for the 70th Anniversary Celebration. The stone was moved from the Lundgren family farm to Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in the spring of 2009.
In 1937, the name of the church was changed from the Swedish Evangelical Lutheran Church to Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church. The church is affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
The building of the original church started in the spring of 1874 and was dedicated in 1879. The present church was built in 1912. In 1937, the sanctuary of the church was given a major renovation, which has been maintained to the present time. The fellowship hall was added in 1993.
